Michael Phelps and John Belushi

UPDATE BELOW (with new SNL clip)

In a few hours, Michael Phelps will host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live.

With the "controversy" surrounding Phelps endorsing Frosted Flakes instead of Wheaties and Phelps' own colossal diet, I'd love to see a reprise of one of the best John Belushi bits on SNL.

UPDATE: So while they didn't mention Frosted Flakes or have him smoking a cigarette, SNL did have a great skit with the message that "you too can have a 12,000 calorie a day diet:"

Sarah Palin's double

Is Lauren, the Pretend Farmer, living a double life? Is she really Alaska Governor Sarah Palin?

I don't know about you, but the resemblance is spooky. Either Sarah Palin has constructed a detailed double life several thousand miles from Alaska or we have a switched at birth situation.

Which one is which? I don't know!

More comedy

Here's a silly YouTube video I came across. With higher production values (think make-up and wig), they could be decent SNL cast members or something like that. They are Gabe and Jenny, apparently a comedy duo based in NYC.

Luck of the Irish

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Do whatever your normal St. Patrick's day thing is. What do I do? I put on a green shirt and not think about it further. I don't see the point of going to overcrowded bar and drinking Irish beer when I can drink good Irish beer on any other day of the year.

One of my favorite St. Patrick's Day related things is John Belushi's Weekend Update commentary on the the luck of the Irish. I can't seem to find any clips of it online due to the stingy executives at NBC. Here it is written out, which doesn't do justice of course. The clip is on the Best of John Belushi on SNL if you happen to have it or want to get it on Netflix or Blockbuster or Amazon.

Here's a different John Belushi clip totally unrelated to St. Patrick's Day or the Irish, except for the mention of corned beef.

New rule in satire

The old standing rule of humor states that if you are going to poke fun at a group, you must be a member of that group, otherwise it's not funny. Or at least, it's not tasteful.

Now there is a new rule! According to some, when engaging in satire, you can only satirize someone who matches your exact racial and ethnic background. Otherwise, it's out of line.

We learn today that some people were miffed that on Saturday Night Live last week, Fred Armisen, played Barack Obama in the debate sketch. This is bad, we're told, because Fred Armisen is not African-American. Incidentally, Armisen is biracial too, but the wrong kind; he's half white and half Asian. Since his ethnicity only matches with Obama's halfway, the sketch would have been better served by Kenan Thompson, whose ethnicity technically also only matches with Obama's halfway. Kenan Thompson is probably the least talented current castmember and doesn't really resemble Barack Obama.

With this new standard, I guess Maya Rudolph can only satirize people with an African American mother and a Jewish father. No more Donatella Versace skits! She's not qualified.

I don't remember a response to this below sketch from last year, which seems to be a little more edgy and also has an actor whose ethnicity does not match his subject's:

Today's Quote: Getting things done

From last Saturday, Tina Fey tells us in a humorous commentary on SNL in regards to Senator Clinton:

"You know what, bitches get stuff done."
